Description: All these George (and Martha) Washington spoons were collected over a lifetime by my late sister Betsy. She visited Mount Vernon almost annually and otherwise found them whenever and wherever she could. These are but a fraction of her huge Washingtonia collection, most of which is up on this eBay site. Before I go into any more detail, let me clarify any question you have about silver content in these spoons and in general. Namely that unless an item -- whether it's silverware, platters, jewelry, or mugs -- specifically says "sterling", "silver", or the number "925", it's not silver. Don't be fooled. Even if a company has the name "silver" in it, like Wm. Rogers & Son International Silver, it isn't silver unless it's stamped silver. And I'm sorry to see that a reputable company is selling a Rogers spoon using the International Silver line without acknowledging that point. Yes, silverplate is silver, and it adds something special for sure to the appearance (including the ability to tarnish). But it's an extremely thin layer and it's so difficult to remove that silver buyers don't buy it. Only one of my spoons is sterling (and says so); the rest are worth their weight because of their age, their rarity, or because of their craftsmanship. Or they're cheap! Here's a bit more detail:• 200th Anniversary. Just what it says: this spoon was made for the widely-celebrated 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, 1732-1932, which makes this spoon 92 years old. It's a comparatively simple design on the front, with a detailed design of Mt. Vernon on the back. Made of -- or by -- Washington Silverplate. 2 available.• Cherry Tree. This is my only sterling silver spoon, and a unique one in content as well. Packed with images from top to bottom on both front and back, the front features young George at the base of the moralistic cherry tree, with a hatchet about an inch below. The U.S. Capitol sits in the bowl. Mt. Vernon sits on the reverse side on the handle. Apparently, but I can't prove this, the spoon was made in the mid-1800s by the D.N. Walford Co., and weighs 13.9g. 1 available.• George Washington, Franklin Mint. The Franklin Mint issued a set of pewter spoons in 1976 to commemorate the 13 colonies and the Founding Fathers. This spoon has a 3D image of Washington on the handle and another of him on a horse reviewing the troops at Valley Forge. 1 available.• George Washington, Blue, Wm. Rogers. The very elaborate Wm. Rogers and Son silverplate spoon is one of the most elaborately designed and most commonly available. (I'm selling 22 of them!) This one, however, was made with a blue overlay and comes in its own, admittedly worn box. 1 available.• George Washington, Wm. Rogers and Son, silverplate, 6". This is a popular Washington commemorative spoon, and for good reason. It starts on the front at the top with a "cameo" of Washington, ascot and all, with the words "FIRST PRESIDENT" and his years in office, 1789-1797. His name runs down the neck of the spoon to the bowl, where there is an elaborate depiction of Mount Vernon. On the other side, the reverse of the cameo has a double ark-like paean to the flag, along with 13 stars for the colonies. Willow leaves point down to the company's name. 22 available.• Mount Vernon Antiqued Pewter Spoon. Created by and for the Ladies Association of Mount Vernon. Made in 1992. New in the package. 1 available. New.• Pewter Enamel Portrait. A double benefit, a pewter spoon with an enamel portrait. Never been out of package, so don't know designer. 1 available. New.• Washington w/eagle, 1889, Wm. Rogers and Son, silverplate. An antique spoon now 135 years old which was issued to celebrate the centennial of Washington's inauguration. A handsome spoon representative of the design of its time, a nice feature is how the portrait of the eagle is continued on the back side, with its backside. 1 available.• Washington w/shield, Oneida. A beautiful, very detailed, old-style, and labeled silverplate spoon marked Oneida Community A1 X. It actually purchased Wm. Rogers and Son at the turn of the 20th century, I understand, and these markings represent models under the new company. The design is used for lots of state and foreign country silverware. 2 available.• Wallingford Sugar/Berry spoons. Rare and wonderful in that the design touts not only the First President but the District of Columbia, with intricate images of the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the Washington Monument, Mount Vernon, and a robed goddess holding the Constitution, all on two sides of a spoon. 2 available.• Yours to Remember, FORT, USA. Another 2-for-1 bargain, a handsome pewter spoon with a colored cameo portrait celebrating his presidential terms. It rocks with an almost guitar-shaped look, from the Capitol to the White House. I'm happy to share! The more spoons you buy, the greater the discount on each one. Plus it's $5.75 in postage for the first spoon and you only pay 60¢ additional in postage for every extra spoon you purchase at the same time. If and when it makes sense, I'll mail Flat Rate Small Box and/or Padded Envelope (I think 12 or more spoons) and refund you the difference. Ask any questions. Thanks for reading! An AI Free Zone!Rick
