Description: This is a very fine early WWII U.S. Legion of Merit that is in excellent condition. The enamel work on the planchet is undamaged and features the deep maroon enamel border outlining the white enamel in the arms and the deep emerald, green enamel in the wreath. The planchet is suspended on its original ribbon and mounted on a full wrap broach that is complete with functional pin and catch assemblies. The broach is incised at the rear with the number ‘282’ making it one of the earliest WWII issued pieces. The planchet is made of sterling silver as evidenced by the silver revealed by some of the gilt worn areas on the reverse. These sterling silver pieces are very much sought after because of the beautiful toning the planchet takes on with age. This is a hard-to-find example that remains in excellent condition.8911
