Description: A fantastic original German EASTERN FRONT map dated 1915 with hand added operational markings relating to the Russians' BRUSILOV OFFENSIVE of September 1916.Initially, this is a tricky map to investigate as virtually all of the place names have changed since the map was printed. (At the time of printing, the territory was part of Poland but now falls entirely within Ukraine's international borders.)The Brusilov Offensive was a huge Russian push on the Eastern Front which began in June 1916 and lasted until the end of September. It sought to capture a number of cities held by Austro-Hungarian forces including KOWEL (now KOVEL) which lies just ten miles North West of the top left corner.The Russians were successful in capturing LUCK (now LUTSK) in the early days if the fighting, and as the frontline moved further West, large numbers of German troops were diverted away from the Battle of Verdun on the Western Front and sent to support the Austro-Hungarians.There are a number of operational markings which have been added in the area between KOWEL and LUCK which appear to be a set of German and Russian frontline positions. In addition there are a number of what seem to be Divisional markings with one HQ marked with a triangular flag symbol.The Brusilov Offensive eventually ground to a halt on 20th September, and whilst German writing on the back of the map reads "1916 Sept-Oktober", a pencil date in the margin next to the blue German frontline is recorded as 3/8/16. This date is perfect for the Battle of Kowel (an important action of the Brusilov Offensive) which raged between 24th July and 8th August 1916. Verifying the exact date of these hand recorded positions should be possible with further research. Interestingly, it brings together an area normally covered by nine separate maps but is printed on one large single sheet of paper measuring 124cm x 95cm.Condition is very good for a paper map of its age and clear field usage.
