Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating one of the most well known people and a folk hero of the Old West, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. During his life, Hickok was a drover, wagonmaster, soldier, spy, scout, gambler, lawman, gunfighter, showman, and actor as well as one of the most colorful characters of the Old West. While a lot of the stories of Hickok are reported to be fictionalized, some by Hickok himself, he was a noted scout, gambler, gunman, and lawman. Hickok moved West at the age of 18 after finding himself on the wrong side of the law back east. The ruffian lifestyle of the old West was attractive to the young man. One of the people Hickok met early on was a young Bill Cody (age 12). Possibly the first man Hickok killed in a gun battle was David McCanles, alleged leader of the McCanles gang. Hickok was working for a freighting company at the time. Hickok had been mauled by a bear on a freight run. He had been bedridden for four months then transferred to Rock Creek Station in the Nebraska Territory. Hickok was working there as a stable hand while he was on the mend. The station was buying land from David McCanles for one of their stage stops. McCanles came by the office demanding an overdue property payment from Horace Wellman the station manager. McCanles supposedly threatened Wellman, things got heated and Hickok shot McCanles in self defense. Hickok would go on to be a lawman, holding different positions in the frontier territories of Kansas and Nebraska. Hickok is said to have gotten the name "Wild Bill" while running off some desperados. A woman yelled " way to go Wild Bill". Hickok liked the sound of it, and kept the name form that point forward. Hickok is also said to have had a romance with Calamity Jane. Jane even says the two were married though Hickok denied such claims. When he gambled Wild Bill is said to have always sat with his back to the wall so nobody could come up behind him. The ironic thing is that Wild Bill Hickok, one of the best gunman of the Old West met his death when he sat with his back to the door during a poker game in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Hickok tried a couple of times to switch seats with another player but to no avail. Later during the game Jack McCall came to with in three feet of Hickok, pulled his gun, said "take this" and fired, killing Wild Bill Hickok. Hickok often carried his Colt six-guns in a sash around his waist as depicted here. This figure is designed mostly for display for the Wild West or American History fan. PLEASE NOTE- while this figure does not look exactly like Wild Bill Hickok, there is a nice resemblance. figure for display not play. this figure displays well. sold as is. stand included. This would make a nice addition to any collection. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thanks for the look, have fun shopping!
