Description: This cover is a nifty piece of German, Russian, and American postal history! It was sent on April 29, 1896, from someone in Wiesbaden, Imperial Germany, to a Mrs. C.R. Breckinridge, United States Legation, St. Petersburg, Imperial Russia! Mrs. C.R. Breckinridge was the wife of the U.S. Consul to Imperial Russia, Clifton Rodes Breckinridge! Clifton Rodes Breckinridge was a Democratic alderman, congressman, diplomat, businessman and veteran of the Confederate Army and Navy. He was a member of the prominent Breckinridge family, the son of Vice President of the United States and Confederate General John C. Breckinridge and the great-grandson of U.S. Senator and Attorney General of the United States John Breckinridge. He served as U.S. Consul in St. Petersburg between November 1, 1894-December 10, 1897. His wife had accompanied him. To continue, outside of what looks like some slight toning around some of the perfs, the blue, 20-Pfennig, "Eagle," German definitive is in fine condition! The CDS from the Wiesbaden P.O. is quite superb! Lastly, as for the envelope, itself, it's in very good-fine condition! It's pretty clean, having only some minor toning here and there! The back flap is intact! Noted imperfections aside, this cover remains a unique piece of German, Russian, and American postal history connected to a well-known, American politician and military leader's wife, Mrs. C. R. Breckinridge!
