Voltaire’s Candide w/10 CLARA TICE COLORED ETCHINGS 1927 Limited Edition Leather

Description: This is a “Special Issue” of Voltaire’s Candide from 1927 illustrated with TEN COLORED ETCHINGS BY CLARA TICE, the racy bohemian illustrator known as the “Queen of Greenwich Village.” It is a limited edition (#120/250) printed on “special deckle-edge Pannekoek paper” (out of 1,000 copies printed overall). NY: Bennett Libraries, 1927, bound by “Whitman Bennett, NY” (bindery signature to top of FFEP) in full navy blue leather with a four-hubbed spine and boards lettered and tooled in gilt. T.e.g., others untrimmed. The endpapers are marbled and have dentelles ruled in gilt. The book includes Parts I & II, complete, bound together in this one volume. The book is in very good or very good- condition but for the fact that the front joint is starting at the bottom, the rear hinge is splitting (noticeable only when the rear cover is fully open and extended), there is a minor binding error (noticeable in the gutter between the front endpapers), some scuffs, rubs, and loss of gilt to the lettering and decorations to the spine and boards, bumping and wear-through to some small areas on the spine ends and corners, and a few very small smudges to the pages. Please see photographs as to condition. The pages are bright and have no handwriting on them; all ten color plates are intact, with tissue-paper overlays, and remain colorful. Given the thickness of the navy leather used for the binding, and notwithstanding the splitting and starting noted above, the binding nonetheless remains fully functional and feels solid, tight, and square. This collectible limited edition is not ex-library and has no bookplates. It will be shipped bubble-wrapped in a box.
