Description: Guangzhou (formerly known as Canton) is the megacity of 18 million people at the heart of the Pearl River Delta region in southeast China, the world’s largest metropolitan area (with 65 million people) that includes Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen (the first of China’s special economic zones). It is the economic engine of China, the center of Cantonese culture, and the original home for many overseas Chinese (the reason Cantonese is widely spoken among many ethnic Chinese communities around the world). Included here are maps & guides to this important port city, from a time when China was just emerging from the isolation of the Mao era, opening up to the rest of the world and allowing western tourists. There is a small but colorful foldout map & guide, when Guangzhou was a much smaller (but still bustling) place, home to 3 million souls on 54 square kilometers, it boasted “more than ten famous restaurants” and at least seven hotels (all local, none of them part of international luxury chains) (from Guangdong Travel and Tourism Press, late 1970’s); and a glossy foldout map & guide to Guangzhou from a few years later, when the busy entrepôt was starting to develop a bit more of a tourist infrastructure (from Cartographic Publishing House, 1985).
