Description: Description Beautiful Antique hand carved wooden Kashigata Mold in a paddle shape that was used to mold sweet cakes. Historically these have been used since the 17th century. The molds were made of Cherry wood and seasoned 3 years before hand carving the intricate design in the wood. The cakes and sweets in designs such as flowers and fish were used in place of real flowers and food in family shrines, as these things were costly and would not last as long.The sweet confection was made of rice flour and sugar and called rakugan. Used also for cakes for tea ceremonies where they were dried, tapped out and arranged in pretty boxed collections. This mold has signs of age and use, small nicks and marks that show it has been actually used in the past. *Measures approx. 8" tall from top to bottom of block & 4" side to side (actual inset area slightly less of course)*Feel free to contact me for any additional photos or information you may need.
