Description: CAIRO NOVELTY COPPERHEAD (INV. # 03) Size:0.71 Near Mint/ Mint Minus w/ tiny as-made imperfections and micro scuffs that may or may not be visible to the naked eye (Pics are best description). This marble likely grades higher, but I would rather someone be extremely satisfied with their purchase after they receive it than less satisfied. Cairo Novelty marbles are RARE by default due to their production history. SHIPPING $5 to ship within the United States, international shipping may be more. I will combine shipping at no additional cost. PROVENANCE I owned the Cairo Novelty factory site in Cairo West Virginia for two years and and can guarantee unequivocally that this marble was dug (by me) on that property in close proximity to the factory. Mint marbles have been found/dug on the Cairo Novelty factory site due a flood that occurred in 1950. HISTORY The Cairo Novelty Company was founded by Oris Hanlon in 1946, and was located near the town of Cairo in Ritchie County, West Virginia. Marble production began sometime the following year. The company operated in a small building and was reported to have only one marble machine. A flood inundated the town of Cairo on June 25, 1950. According to many local sources the factory had thousands of marbles packaged in cardboard ready to ship. The flood waters rose all the way into the factory reaching the packaged marbles. The water quickly softened the cardboard packaging causing it to tear-open and marbles spilling-out into various areas of the property. The company went out of business several years later. This site is currently closed to collecting.
