This is the largest mat of this type that I have ever seen, AND it's in Excellent condition. The Shakers were known for making these mats, using old silk (I've been told old silk stockings, dyed), but it was, also, a popular craft here in the midcoast region of Maine. I remember my great aunt making them, and marveling at her dexterity in braiding such thin braids and being able to fold all the raw edges in at the same time. The most popular size was up to 8" to 10" in diameter, and used to sit on a sewing or night stand. It was common to call them "stand cloths". I have had this huge mat for many years, having bought it at a country auction in Waldoboro, Maine. I have pictured both sides and you will see that the back is only slightly brighter than the top side. Hand stitiching of the braids is visible on the backside. There is no wear and no soiling.
