Audubon's niece was so impressed by the beauty of the place that she asked, if a settlement were ever established here, they name it after her uncle, John J. Audubon, a nature enthusiast.Later when the town began in 1872 with a hotel, Northern Pacific Railroad and a small land office and streets were laid out, they were given names of local birds in honor of the naturalist.A Town on the GrowBy 1873 Audubon had its own newspaper, "The Audubon Journal" with the subscription price of $1.00 a year.In 1876 the town had a store, blacksmith shop, two saloons, a hotel, an inn, a market, three attorneys, one physician and a Justice of the Peace.In 1896 Audubon had a clothing store, hardware store, meat market, two bars, two restaurants, shoe and harness maker, hotel, music store, wagon makers, funeral supply store, jewelry store, grocery store and a creamery.
