Description: VINTAGE 1952 TYPEWRITER REMINGTON NOISELESS 7 SERVICED NEW RIBBON EXCELLENT Never buy a vintage typewriter unless you know the condition, it is difficult and comparatively expensive to get typewriters serviced or repaired. EXCELLENT CONDITION and FULL WORKING ORDER Serial number FHT 110998 which identifies it as a machine built in 1952, made under licence in France Remington made an enormous and well respected range of typewriters and they found there was a market for a high quality 'noiseless' machine, one which was far quieter than the other machines on the market. They used an ingenious linkage to the stamp arms which stopped the stamps just short of the roller, stopping the impact noise, and returned them quietly as well. The frame and feet were also designed to minimise noise. It was more expensive to manufacture so these were always a premium machine. They made 'noiseless' desk typewriters and portables like this one. They were aimed firmly at the professional user and designed to be comfortable to use for long periods. The first 'noiseless' portable machines were made in 1932, very advanced for the time. They were gradually improved culmination in the Model 7, which is recognised as the best of the series. They are a delight to use. Once you have got used to the quietness they are known for a very nice 'feel' and action. My RSA qualified tester was very pleasantly surprised just how nice it was to use. I am told that once you have used a 'noiseless' you wont want to go back to an ordinary machine! There is a demand for good examples of these machines from typists who understand their advantages, and good ones like this still command a premium. This typewriter has been carefully cleaned, lubricated and serviced and checked throughout. A new ribbon has been fitted and it is entirely ready to use. Once cleaned the stamps proved to be in good condition (there is a photo of the very sharp typeface obtained). The machine has facility for black/red/stencil and a brand new black ribbon has been fitted. Ribbon reversal is achieved manually using the small plungers on the sides of the machine below the tape reels. The keys are round, in black, with very clear white symbols. It has the QWERTY keyboard, these can have minor variations so please check the photograph of the keyboard. There is a carriage lock on the right front of the carriage. There is a typing 'weight' adjustment to the right of the keyboard. There is full tabulator function. The machine looks very military, it in period olive green crackle finish in pretty good condition with only very minor wear*. The position of the ribbon reels is unusual and makes these machines look rather different. (* picture 4 appears to show wear, that is an unfortunate light reflection!) The case is original rigid in black and in good condition. The handle is good and the catch, although tarnished, works as it should. The typewriter clips firmly into the base and releases as it should do. The machine, cased, measures 36cm x 35cm x 18cm and weighs 8.2kg Replacement ribbons are readily and cheaply available on ebay. I would recommend that you look for the ribbons sold by Globe Typewriters who I rely on for reliable service. On these machines the new ribbon has to be wound onto the original spools, which is pretty easy on these model 7 machines. It will be carefully packed for transit.
