Description: USS Washington BB-56 USN Battleship first day cover with a postmark on Jan 9, 2022 from Findlay, Ohio. Blue printed photo cachet #1910 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with a 57 cent Flag stamp # 5657 and a 55 cent USS Missouri stamp # 5392. This 728 foot NC Class battleship was built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She was launched on 1 June 1940 and commissioned on 15 May 1941. She had nine 16 inch guns, twenty five inch guns, fifteen 40mm anti-aircraft guns and 48 20mm anti-aircraft cannons. The ship carried three Vought OS-2U Kingfisher float-planes for recon and rescue operations. The proud vessel reported to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in July 1942, and started her three year battle with the enemy in the Pacific Theater, earning 13 WW II Battle Stars. She was operating primarily as an anti-aircraft platform escort for the carriers and a bombardment ship attacking close-in shore battles.
