Description: USS PARCHE, SS 384, 1943 LAUNCHING TAG, WWII SUBMARINE These original colorful launching tags were official launching party token that were issued to naval personnel and civilian employees authorized to attend sub launches from the shipways. They were only issued for launches of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) submarines from either Portsmouth, NH or Kittery, Maine.THE LAUNCH TAG MEASURES 1 3/4" ACROSS. IT IS MADE OF CARD STOCK WITH A METALIC FOIL COVERING.It is in excellent condition, (please see photos).Balao Class Submarine: Laid down, 9 April 1943, at Portsmouth Navy Yard, on Seavey Island in Kittery, Maine. Launched, 24 July 1943; Commissioned USS Parche (SS-384), 20 November 1943; "Bikini target July 1946; Decontaminated; returned to Pearl Harbor 7 September 1946; Decommissioned 11 December 1946; Assigned to duty as a Naval Reserve Training ship at Alameda, CA., 10 February 1948; Reclassified as an Auxiliary Research Submarine (AGSS-384), 1 December 1962; Relieved of duty as a Naval Reserve Training ship, circa late 1969.Struck from the Naval Register, 8 November 1969. Final Disposition, sold for scrapping 18 June 1970 to Zidell Portland, OR for $ 74.580.00.
