Hardcover. Very Good binding and spine, especially for its age. Front cover has a surface tear in cloth near top. Shelf wear on some edges and spine ends. Corner bumps and wear. Three inscriptions in book in neat handwriting on 3 different pages. All 406 pages are clean and intact except a stain on some page edges that affects several pages. This heavy book was published in England and called the Household Edition. Pages have light, even tanning. See photos. Lucile is a verse novel first published in 1860. The poem is a narrative told in an anapaest meter. It remains his most popular work, achieving popularity in the 19th century, despite accusations of plagiarism involving elements of an 1831 George Sand novella, Lavinia. In the next 100 years, more than 2,000 editions were produced by nearly 100 publishers. Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831-1891), was known by his pen name Owen Meredith. Lytton's career as Viceroy of India (1876-80) was controversial, including the great famine (1876-78) and the Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), both of which he is seen to have mishandled, leading to many deaths. He planned the spectacular Delhi Durbar of 1877, the ceremony at which Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India. During his diplomatic career, he wrote many poems as Owen Meredith.
