Description: Copper/Bronze Commemorative Israel State Medal This is the first designed State Medal, produced and sold in Israel. This is suspected to be from the first edition, made available in 1958, for the 10 year Independence Day Celebration (one of the Hebrew words on the coin obverse edge are the letters used for"1958"). Versions were made available in several different metals (gold, silver, etc.); this is one of the bronze/copper medals. This coin was given to me as a gift for my Bar Mitzvah in 1986. The coin is uncirculated, and has been maintained in cushioned storage since that time. Unknown how it was stored or maintained prior to then. The coin comes with a wood display stand; the base bottom is stamped "L'Derman Coins and Stamps," with an address and phone number. Weight of coin: 105 grams. 61.4 mm diameter, 4.4 mm thick. Obverse of coin depicts three settlers which appear to be kibbutzniks (kibbutz dwellers); the man is crouched and planting crops beneath a palm tree, while the woman is lifting a toddler. The medal perimeter states "Israel Liberata", and the Hebrew can be translated to "Independence Day of Israel," with the year "1958." Reverse depicts a Roman coin in the center, with a central palm tree under which stands a Roman soldier and a woman, kneeling in mourning. This is meant to symbolize destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The coin edge is plain without any markings. I do not know if this is in fact from the original minting. Please bid at your own risk.
