He studied from 1859 at the Charles University in Prague and from 1863 to 1865 at the University of Vienna. In 1865 he received his doctorate in Vienna and in 1867 as a surgeon. He was a student of Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke and Eduard Jäger von Jaxtthal.
