Description: Years ago (17 Sept 2002), I wrote a letter to the then (retired) Secretary of the Navy James Webb asking him to sign my first printing of his first book with “Semper Fidelis”. It’s an interesting letter –mentions a little of my book collecting history, a prior meeting with Webb in the Pentagon as well as the then prospect of a film adaptation. He returned my signed book along with a hand written comment about my mention of his book and he signed it at bottom “My Pleasure, James Webb.” As most know, Webb ran for the Senate and won in 2014. Including the above signed folded letter laid in, SIGNED by former Secretary of the Navy and Senator from Virginia James Webb on the FFEP with “Semper Fidelis “ above , up for auction is a first printing (1 in its print run) of the true First American Edition of his rare first book, Fields of Fire (Englewood Cliffs, NJ, Prentice Hall, 1978) which was lauded by The Oregonian as "a novel of such fullness and impact, one is tempted to compare it to Norman Mailer's “The Naked and the Dead". The book is in very good condition in a square reasonably firm binding with a touch of faint sunning to bottom edges of green boards Exterior is nice and page ends are clean. Interior is fine with no errant interior marks or names. With photo of the young author on rear panel, from a credited 1965 Marine Corp photo, in a brodart cover, the dust jacket is priced and in very good condition with a small chip at heel and tiny chip to top front corner. Panels show light rubbing a few small wrinkles. The signed typed letter is still in fine condition – laid in the book in a closed book case these many years. The opening bid is $80.00 with an affordable Buy It Now. Buyer pays $5.50 padded and boxed media rate shipping in the USA. I don’t ship directly out of country but will use EBay’s service. Books are returnable in same condition for a full refund.
