Graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Art and Design, Musashino Art University. As a manga artist, he has published the books Umi Kaeri Sen (1990) and World Apartment Horror (1991, both published by Kodansha). He moved from manga to the animation industry and made his directorial debut in 1998 with the feature film "Perfect Blue." He was a curator for the NHK program "Digista" and a lecturer at the vocational school "Art College Kobe." In April 2008, he became a visiting professor at the Department of Film and Media Studies at Musashino Art University. He passed away suddenly on August 24, 2010 due to pancreatic cancer. He was 46 years old.
