Description: Redon, Odilon. (1840-1916). Three Autograph Postcards to Cyprian and Marie Mathilde Godebeski. Three autograph picture postcards signed (‘Od. Redon', ‘Odilon R.', ‘Od. R.') from the French symbolist painter and printmaker who, in his words, wanted to "place the visible at the service of the invisible." Addressed to [Cyprian] (‘Cipa') and [Marie Mathilde] (‘Madame') Godebski, [Paris], postmarked 14 October 1903 - 2 October 1906. In French. Each postcard 139 x 91mm, showing scenes of Paris: the gargoyles of Notre Dame, the rue de Prony, and a fresco in the Hotel-de-Ville. Some water staining and mounting remnants, else fine. Provenance : Sotheby's, 14 & 15 April 1982, lot 451. Redon remembers his time spent with Godebski and his family during visits and on holiday together. The earliest postcard has a single-line message written beneath a photograph of the gargoyles of Notre Dame: ‘nous ne vous oublions pas'. The second, of 9 July 1906, bears the longest message, in which Redon describes his memory of his friend and of ‘the mists of Germany which for us are fresh and without melancholy'. He describes the ‘disorder' he feels in Paris and his intention to leave the day after tomorrow. He will expect Godebski ‘over there, on the small beach that your children like.' The last message tells his correspondent that he ‘remembers those good moments at St Georges [de Didonne] beside our friends'. Cyprian Godebski (1835-1909) was a Franco-Polish sculptor. He and Redon almost certainly met in Paris, where Godebski lived for a period after the death of his first wife (Zofia Servais Godebska, 1950-1872) and where he hosted a popular literary and artistic salon.
