Description: This Civil War artifact is a seldom-seen example of a Federal Model 1858 smoothside canteen as was issued to Union forces in the war. This rare original canteen is an Indianapolis-style specimen product believed to made by the Jacob Voegtle firm in Indianapolis, Indiana, with its slightly tapered, thin pewter spout that joins directly onto the elliptical tin collar. The canteen is complete with its 3 sling loops, iron pull ring, cork stopper, and chain. A like canteen is featured on page 202 of Mike O’Donnell’s fine reference book US Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910. This canteen is a true survivor of the American Civil War and presents a great opportunity to acquire a rare, seldom encountered Federal canteen. It has a nice used but not abused look as can be seen in the photos.
