Description: Coal Region in Pennsylvania Picking Slate at Coal Mineposted circa 1906 This is a vintage antique postcard showing breaker boys picking slate in a anthracite coal mine. These young boys worked inside a anthracite coal breaker picking out the slate from the coal. It was dangerous, back breaking work, working 10 hours a day for six days a week. Beginning in the 1860's this practice of using boys between 8 and 12 years old continued until it was discontinued in the 1920's. This postcard in very good, posted condition.
