Felix Vallotton was a Swiss-born artist, but became a huge name in France where he worked for most of his life. Vallotton left his native Switzerland for Paris at the age of 17. He soon enrolled in the Academie Julien art school, where one of his fellow-students was Toulouse-Lautrec. He exhibited his first paintings at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1885, but wanted to break away from traditional mainstream styles, and so began to work with and exhibit with the "Nabis" group. The Nabis group drew inspiration from the adventurous style of Gaugain, and their membership included Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and Aristide Maillol. Vallotton made his first prints in 1897, and contributed several illustrations to prominent Parisian magazines, such as "Le RIre". His woodcuts drew inspiration from Japanese methods and styles, and Vallotton stripped it all back almost to Abstract form. As this portrait of Puvis De Chavannes shows, he had moved away from Impressionism and the Art Nouveau style, and created something very distinctive that was entirely his own.He went on the produce 55 lithographs and 145 woodcuts many of which can be found in leading Museums and Galleries worldwide. This particular piece was commissioned by "The Studio", and was published by the magazine as a Special Supplement with the famous blindstamp; it was not published anywhere else. "The Studio" magazine was a lavishly produced and prestigious showcase for artists in the 1890's to promote their graphic work, they would submit their drawings etc. to be lithographed in the ground-breaking style of "The Studio"s accomplished lithographers such as Thomas Robert Way and William Griggs. Artists of the calibre of Beardsley, Whistler, Waterhouse, Pennell, Valloton, Knopff etc. etc. used it as a medium for bringing their work to an informed readership. The editors would also commission works from artists, meaning that they would not be published anywhere else. The print run of the magazine was about 3,000, and subscribers included many institutions and galleries both in the UK and further afield. Under the editorship of Charles Holme, it always tried to keep a balance between the work of established artists and new emerging talent, and to promote the "avant-garde" . ***MARKETWATCH*** See my final photo for an idea of how the upscale specialist galleries price this item (framed up).
