Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE RARE ORIGINAL FILM COWBOY BUCK JONES PROMOTIONAL MOVIE THEATER LOBBY BANNER, CIRCA 1930 – COLUMBIA PICTURES OFFERED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: An original Buck Jones promotional movie theater lobby banner, which dates to around 1930. It’s made of a felt-type material and would have hung in the lobby of a movie theater where Buck Jones’ films were showing or were going to be shown. This was strictly promotional and never sold to the public. What I love about this banner is that it was used in the very early years of the sound era in films, as evidenced by the wording “ALL TALKING”. Having begun in 1927 with the film “The Jazz Singer”, sound was still a relatively new innovation in 1930 and "talkies" were a big draw. With the advent of sound, outdoor westerns fell out of favor, but established film star Buck Jones made a smooth transition from silent movies to sound pictures and was signed to Columbia Pictures. He continued to make films until his untimely passing in November 1942, one of the 492 victims of the tragic fire at Boston’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub. These banners are extremely rare. I couldn’t even find an image of another one on the internet. It shows fading from light on the front and general wear and staining from its almost 100 years of existence, but it’s a survivor and a beautiful display piece that was never meant to last beyond its initial use. It’s a great crossover piece as not only an artifact of the early film western, but also as a piece of early sound film history. The banner is approximately 15 inches wide and 26 inches in length (from the very top to the bottom of the two points. Please take a close look at the photos.
