Components wear out, malfunction, or just go out of style. They usually get replaced with something newer and shinier. But not always: McIntosh amplifiers, JBL Everest speakers, certain Marantz FM tuners, and Ohm Acoustics F speakers are coveted by music lovers and have extremely long lifetimes. Deservedly so. These speakers both SOUND different and LOOK different from conventional "monkey coffin" forward-firing speakers. The truncated obelisk design complements mid-century modern (MCM) decor. Far more important is the sound: music radiates in a toroidal pattern (a donut shape) around the listening room. The music is reproduced omnidirectionally in the horizontal plane - full range - by one speaker alone, much like a pulsating cylinder. Phase and time alignment problems caused by splitting the music into multiple parts with a crossover are eliminated. The sound is transparent, vivid, and spacious. Symphonic music and choral music in particular greatly benefit from this dispersion pattern. The speakers require a powerful amplifier to come alive musically. An ordinary receiver will not do them justice. They can play loudly, but are not the right speakers to reproduce rock music at live concert levels. If you want the kind of volume that causes blood to drip from your ears, the Ohm F is not for you. If you listen to classical music or jazz in a medium-sized room at home, the Ohm F will be something very special. Professional musicians will appreciate the way these speakers reproduce the distinctive timbre of individual instruments with great realism. The cabinets are in very nice condition. The rubber surrounds decayed some years ago and were professionally replaced by Van L Speakerworks in Norridge Illinois. The speakers are big and heavy, and shipping them would be expensive.
