Description: New Yrok City Thrown to the Wolves by Republican Presidential Candidate James Blaine 1880s Antique LithographYou are bidding on an original antique print from an 1880s American newspaper. It shows an allegory of "A Sacrefice to the Political Wolf: Republican Desperation and the Peril of New York City." It shows politicians (including OBrien ID'd, a two other men who I believe are Republican presidential candidate James G. Blaine and Vice President candidate John Alexander Logan) in a sleigh drawn by three horses named Bluster, Bribery and Brag. They are chased by a wolf named Tammany. And they are throwing out a little girl named New York City-- hoping the wolf will take her so they can escape unharmed. I believe this represents the time of the Mugrumps. The Mugwumps were Republican political activists who bolted from the United States Republican Party by supporting Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the United States presidential election of 1884. They switched parties because they rejected the financial corruption associated with Republican candidate James G. Blaine. In a close election, the Mugwumps supposedly made the difference in New York state and swung the election to Cleveland. The artist was Joseph Ferdinand Keppler (1 February 1838 - 19 February 1894), was an Austrian-born American cartoonist and caricaturist, who greatly influenced the growth of satirical cartooning in the United States. Wonderful humor piece from 125 years ago. The page measures approximately 13.4 x 10.2 inches (33.8 x 25.7cm). There is text on the back side but it does not show through. Back then, the paper was high quality and the print and illustrations are crisp. The page is in excellent condition for its age. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
