Museum Quality 17th Century Rare Antique Georgian English Wood Carved Box

Description: This extraordinary English carved fruitwood stationery box is a rare, museum-quality artifact with impressive provenance. Adorned with the armorial coat of arms of the 6th Earl of Plymouth, this piece showcases exquisite craftsmanship from the 17th century, circa 1670. The interior was later fitted around 1820, when the ornate ormolu coat of arms was added, blending centuries of history into a singular work of art. The box features elaborate geometric carvings, including intricate whorls, stars, and chip-carved diamond motifs. Its lid is decorated with two prominent roundels, reminiscent of atomic orbital diagrams, while the sides are adorned with detailed panels of whorls, stars, and elliptical petals. The artistry of the 17th-century carvings is exceptional, reflecting a high level of skill and precision. The coat of arms represents Other Archer Windsor, the 6th Earl of Plymouth (1789-1833), and his wife, Lady Mary Sackville. Their family history is deeply woven into the piece, with the Earl’s country estate at Hewell Grange, Worcestershire, adding to its heritage. The Earl’s unusual forename 'Other,' linked to a Viking ancestor, adds a unique narrative to this artifact. Originally crafted around 1670 as a slope-fronted box, the piece underwent significant updates around 1820. A dovetailed side drawer was expertly added, complete with a brass pin for security, and the lock and hinges were upgraded. This careful adaptation, possibly coinciding with the Earl's marriage in 1811, suggests its value as a family heirloom. The geometric carving style is reminiscent of Northern European influences, popular in the late 17th century. A similar writing box, crafted for Richard Cromwell in 1659, is housed in the V&A British Galleries, highlighting the historical significance of this design. This piece exhibits a rich, dark patina, almost black in subdued light, with a beautiful color that enhances its aged character. Photographed in natural and professional lighting, the box’s intricate details and fine condition are evident. It remains in untouched "country house" condition, with minor losses to edge moldings but no restoration, preserving its authenticity. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
