Description: M8687 Yoruba Sango Gelede Helmet Mask. Royal Ancestor. Oyo Kingdom. Nigeria Africa You would not be viewing this unless you know a bit about Sango masks. Found in Yorubaland (southern Nigeria), this helmet mask represents Sango a royal ancestor of the Yoruba (the third king of the Oyo Kingdom). Facial “Pele” markings on the cheeks. This is probably a ceremonial mask. Carved from one piece of wood, the encrusted patina and distinctive features put this mask in a category by itself. It is considered museum quality even with the collapsed nostril. A metal authenticity stamp is affixed below the right ear. No tourist masks are ever offered by me. Circa mid-1900’s. In good condition. 7.5” tall x 12” long x 8” wide. Stand not included. I have been a collector for over 60 years and have spent this time searching for the most unique, wonderous and culturally-significant pieces from far off places like Africa, Middle East, South & Southeast Asia, Central & South America and the Oceania Islands. Most were acquired from the country of origin and/or from avid collectors. All that I know about the item - through provenance or my own research - is shown in the listing. It’s now time for me to thin out my collection. I am sure you will enjoy this item and its history as much as I have.
