Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-1866) was a Scottish writer and the wife of essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle. Joseph Neuberg was a businessman and devoted fan of Thomas Carlyle who left his business to become Carlyle's off-and-on literary secretary. Neuberg maintained a close friendship with the Carlyles and saved these letters he received from Jane over the course of 14 years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
