Contains one page on laid paper, measures 12.75 by 7.5 inches, in fine condition with minor staining and soiling throughout, and nicely framed to an overall size of 14.25 by 9 inches. LEAF FROM ONE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON’S FAMOUS LETTERBOOKS THAT DOCUMENTED HIS CORRESPONDENCE FROM 1754 TO 1797 AND ARE CURRENTLY HOUSED AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Accompanied with handwritten provenance from Washington’s great-grandnephew, Bushrod Washington Herbert: “This leaf Cut out from an old letter Book once the property of Gen. Washington at Mount Vernon & now owned (book) by a great nephew & presented by him to his dear friend & Institute mate Isaac Bloodgood Esq. of Flushing, Long Island, N.Y. Bushrod W. Herbert. March 1st, 1883, Prospect Hill, W. VA.” Along with an additional handwritten note from Herbert around the watermark: “Look at this held up to the Light.” ACCOMPANIED WITH HANDWRITTEN PROVENANCE FROM WASHINGTON’S GREAT-GRANDNEPHEW, BUSHROD WASHINGTON HERBERT: “THIS LEAF CUT OUT FROM AN OLD LETTER BOOK ONCE THE PROPERTY OF GEN. WASHINGTON AT MOUNT VERNON” Provenance: George Washington (1732-1799) > bequeathed to his brother, John Augustine Washington (1736-1787) > bequeathed to his son, Corbin Washington (1765-1799) > bequeathed to his daughter, Mary Lee Washigton Herbert (1796-1827) > bequeathed to her son, Bushrod Washington Herbert (1815-1888) > gifted to his friend, Isaac Bloodgood (1815-1898), who exhibited it at the 1889 centennial exhibition of Washington’s inauguration.
