Description: One of the more interesting aspects of this silkwork is that the child has the face and arms of an adult. At the time, patterns were not yet available for these features for children and young ladies often copied that of adults. This characteristic of using adult features on a child helps us determine that this is a very early piece of silkwork. The colors in this piece are luscious and well-chosen to be extremely pleasing; all harmonize well with each other. The silkwork was done primarily in long and short stitches, along with some overlay stitching. It has been wonderfully shaded to make the fabric on the clothing appear to have folds. The tree is also shaded, creating a more three-dimensional appearance. The background shrubs were done uniquely, as though they were ocean waves and not flora. The basket was expertly embroidered to resemble a weave. The grass beneath the tree appears to showcase individual blades, with a plant carefully sown upon the teal blue and gold ground. As most silkwork of this age, the faces, arms and hands were painted in watercolor in great detail. This piece came from a deceased estate in Ireland. It is housed in a piece of black eglomise glass with a wide gilded border within a simple enameled frame. I believe the frame is not the original but was put on at a later date. As the silkwork is in such phenomenal condition with no visible flaws, it may have been resting in a drawer for some time and then taken out to be framed some decades later. The color retention is also phenomenal for an embroidery of its age. The silk floss has lost none of its luminosity. It has a soft, beautiful sheen to it. The painted watercolor background is in excellent condition, with no signs of any flaws. It measures 10-5/8 inches wide by 13-¼ inches high, including the frame.
