Description: Louis the Seventeenth, King of France. In the Temple Prison, Paris 1793. Engraved by Thomas Lewis AtkinsonFramed copy of original engraving This engraving by Brit T.L. Atkinson (1817-1898) is based upon a painting by Belgian painter Baron Egide C.G. Wappers (~1803-1873). It is professionally framed and dates to around the 1930s. The subject is the son of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. Louis was imprisoned in the Temple of Paris with his family during the French revolution. After his father was executed, he succeeded to the title of King of France on 1/21/1793. In 1795 he died in prison of tuberculosis. He was 10years old. (1785-1795). There have been many rumors about his fate, however in 2000 forensic science determined that it was Louis the XVII who died at the Temple Prison. In this picture the child king is in sitting against a wall. Behind him is a work table with tools, rope/string/cord and what appears to be a strap or belt. Above him are the bars to his room. Below on the floor to the right is a revolutionary cap with a torn crumpled page of Le Moniteur Universel, the main French newspaper during the French Revolution. There are a few nicks to the frame and some water damage on the bottom of the frame. The print has mostly been spared however if you look carefully below the writing you can see an area that is lighter. There is no shrinkage or warping of paper. On the back the paper cover has a small tear at the top. The frame measures 23" x 18-1/4" The picture, frame and glass will be well secured and and padded for shipping. *Contact me prior to purchasing to see if a discount on shipping can be agreed upon.
