John Hersey Appeal to Christians Subject of Slavery 1833 2nd ed original cloth

Description: Michael R. Weinstein, Bookseller An Appeal to Christians on the Subject of Slavery. Second edition, no copies of the first recorded in Sabin or on OCLC! A very solid copy in the pubishers original cloth with spine label! This is early American abolishinist work was writed by a Baltimore Methodist evangelical preacher and missionary who called for sending all the slaves to the then American colony of Liberia where he was employed for the American Colonization Society at the time. Though this is the 2nd edition [stated on title-page] of the book, the 1st edition, assumed to be published in 1832, has no recorded copies, Sabin starts with this edition and all leads on OCLC showed this or the far less scarce 3rd edition. It can be assumed the book was unexpectedly popular and had what was likely a very small run of the 1sts sell out quickly leading to this edition. This copy is in the original publishers cloth binding and given cloth isnt really meant to last 200 years, since it was a relatively new binding material and the weaves were quite fine compared to later heavier cloths, so its in surprisinglt respecable shape. Hersey, John. An Appeal to Christians on the Subject of Slavery. Baltimore: Armstrong & Plaskitt, 1833. Sixteenmo. 124pp. Second edition [stated], but first obtainable. Bound in publishers full brown cloth with paper spine label titled in black Moderate foxing throughout, endpapers and title-page soiled, but interanlly overall pretty clean and sound. Boards are soiled, stained and sunned, with corners bumped, spine and label are sunned, label is chipped with some loss of text, overall still a very good copy of this fragile little book.
