Description: AS JAMES DEAN FINISHES UP WORK ON “GIANT” HE INFORMS HIS LONG-TIME AGENT THAT HE HAS HIRED A BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FIRM TO TAKE OVER HIS FINANCES. HIS ALL TOO-BRIEF CAREER WOULD END A FEW WEEKS LATER WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN A CAR CRASH. HE IS THE ONLY ACTOR TO HAVE TWO POSTHUMUS ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS (FOR EAST OF EDEN AND FOR GIANT).JAMES DEAN (1931-1955) TYPED LETTER SIGNED, “James Dean”, in blue ballpoint, 1 pg., 8.5 x 11, July 25, 1955 (dated just weeks before his death), to his agent Miss Jane Deacy, Jane Deacy Agency, New York, NY, by the American actor. Until that point, Deacy had been paying his bills and lending money to Dean in between acting gigs. The letter, in part: “I am sure you will be happy to learn that I have employed the firm of Coulter and Gray as my business managers. I feel confident they will relieve you of a lot of the problems in my behalf which you have handled for me in the past. Their function, of course, is strictly in a business management capacity and will not, in any way, conflict with your activities as my agent….” Somewhat formal letter was likely written, at least in part, by Coulter and Gray, as it then gives Dean’s authorization to transfer sensitive documents to the company. This extremely rare letter, a film history treasurer, written just weeks before his death, comes from the estate of James Dean’s agent and is boldly signed.
