Mr Wingle was very well know for his ski photography in the mid century. His work retains for upwards of $2,500 at galleries and he has exhibited at multiple museums. His bio, from photocentral......and the Skii Hall Of Fame. H. Peter Wingle was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1933, but the Colorado Mountains were his life and skiing and photography were his dual passions. He photographed skiing areas in the US and Canada from the 1950’s-1980’s but Colorado was his home. His photographs were used by Kodak in its advertising and his photos were in the book, “The Skiers World”, published by Random House in 1973. On his own time he was an avid mountaineer who loved to climb remote peaks and descend on skies, but he had a monumental impact on the Colorado ski industry as the US Forest Service’s regional director of recreation. A life-long Forest Service employee and well-respected Colorado skier and freelance photographer, Wingle loved skiing in the backcountry. He was also a director of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association for many years. As a Forest Service employee, Wingle was in charge of recreation and lands for the state of Colorado. He helped shape the development of nearly every ski area in Colorado, including the very popular Steamboat Springs. He told the ultimate developers, “If you don’t put a lift here and don’t use this area, you’re nuts.” Wingle was felled by a spinal tumor in January 1997 while skiing to Francie’s Hut in Summit County, CO. The tumor was removed at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix on January 18, 1997. He was 64. A ridge near Vail Pass was named after Wingle by the US Board of Geographic. For over 30 years, Pete Wingle’s US Forest Service career involved him in ski area business. This was a significant task, when Congress and the Administration did not allow (or tightly regulated) price increases. Pete studied the industry, and convinced the Forest Service Chief to allow industry to charge what they wanted for lift tickets and services as long as the competitive forces were working and there was excess lift capacity. the result, which benefited all Colorado Skiers, was increased investment in lifts and services and reduced lift lines. This expanded partnership between the USDA Forest Service and ski areas resulted in a healthier industry and inspired on mountain ski are development. His 25+ years of ski photography has helped popularize and develop back country skiing (and boarding:)) all over the world. Another one of his passions was guiding people on backcountry adventures in the Bugaboos on heli skiing trips in British Columbia with the Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH). CMH’s logo is featured on his jacket in his HOF photo.
