" Keepers Of The Flame " - because let's face it ... That-Flame ! could get Smokin' ! Red-Hot !! I always find consistency in the fact that real musicians - guitar players especially ... tend to Treasure ! some-form of their Early/Mid/Late-'80's Dead ! Basically, because it is one of the vast " wealth " of knowledge to learn from - and also to Master ! But, people who don't play instruments seriously - seem to ( in general ) kind of ' pick at ' the Dead in the '80's & sometimes all-together ' down it ' - usually citing sloppy ( loose ) interplay / timing - and of course too - yeah, I know - right ... " Jerry's Voice ". Well, all I have to say to that-notion - is this-notion ... Jerry Garcia personally felt that his sheer-guitar-playing was at it's ' Best ' Peak & Prime ! in his Early-'40's ! Heck, I mean go & track down some ' Interviews ' with Jerry during this-Era - and he's more-than-happy to tell you all-about-it. The Guitar is a really-tough instrument to play " Great " ( even if you are ... Garcia ! ). You hit 'stages ' ( next-levels ) constantly ... with the keen-ability to hit a ' variety ' of different & various peaks / primes over the years ( & decades ) ... in say your 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, even 30th year as a Player - and really-truly on & on ... And, if you fully-commit & stick with it religiously - and also play-constantly ( especially if you are playing ' professional ' like Jerry did - for 30-Years ! ) you are bound to go-places ( really-good places ). Frankly, Garcia's guitar fret board work hit flat-out " Peaks ! " All-Throughout ! the '80's Era ... 1980 - 1981 - 1982 - 1983 - 1984 - 1985 - 1986 - 1987 -1988 - 1989 ... with " No ! " Calendar Year being anywhere-close to absent. I mean ... do you have to look a " little-bit-harder " in say ... I don't know - late '86 ( obviously ... ) & maybe '88 ? ( kinda, but saying ' no ' here to '88 is also still very-arguable ). And, it would be far-tougher to pick any other down year after that ( at least if it's me picking - ha ! ). Point being ... 1983 is one of my own " Personal-Favorite ! " years of Grateful Dead ! And, anyone who has any doubt towards this claim ... well, go & thrown in 6/20/83 !!! -- or, even better yet ( just to prove my point ) -- go & get your Headphones-On ! ... and throw in the Uncle John's Band ! from Watsonville !!! - yeah ... like " 9/24/83 Your Face ! ".
