Description: KARL ZIEGLER (KARLSRUHE, 1886 – VIENNA, 1944) He began his career with an engagement at the Vienna Volksoper from 1908 to 1913, where he notably sang the role of the King’s Son in the 1911 Vienna premiere of Humperdinck’s Königskinder. During this period, he also performed as David in Die Meistersinger at Bayreuth from 1911 to 1912. From 1913 to 1917, he was engaged at the Stadttheater in Hamburg, where his repertoire included Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Alfredo in La Traviata, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, and Max in Der Freischütz.From 1917 to 1919, he was a member of the Frankfurt Opera, creating the role of Alviano in the premiere of Franz Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten on April 25, 1918. He also performed as a guest at the Vienna State Opera during 1918 and 1919, subsequently joining the company as a member from 1919 to 1922, while continuing to appear as a guest until 1937. From 1939 to 1941, he returned as a guest performer at the Vienna Volksoper.In the 1930s, his fame spread through Austrian radio broadcasts, particularly as an operetta singer. At the Salzburg Festival in 1926, he performed Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus. He also made notable guest appearances at the Berlin Court Opera (1909), Covent Garden in London (1913), and the Théâtre Pigalle in Paris (1930, in Die Fledermaus).His stage successes included dramatic roles such as Lohengrin, Matthias in Wilhelm Kienzl’s Der Evangelimann, Pedro in Eugen d’Albert’s Tiefland, Hermann in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, Wilhelm Meister in Ambroise Thomas’s Mignon, and Folco in the German-language premiere of Mascagni’s Isabeau (1913, Vienna Volksoper). He also excelled in buffo and character roles, earning acclaim for his vibrant stage presence and expressive voice. Alongside his operatic career, he enjoyed considerable success as a concert singer.
