Staerkel, III, passed away on December 28, doing what he loved - performing on stage. George was born January 28, 1954 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the son of George and Audrey Staerkel. He graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1972, and from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1975. While attending college, George started performing at weddings, the Eagles Club and many other venues with Ralph Becker of Becker Music in Oshkosh. Shortly after that, he started performing on the road with other musicians such as Bob Dolan, Dave Major and the Minors, and as lead singer for the Tokens, performing the song that many have come to know him by, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."While on the road, George met his wife Laura and they settled in Kenosha to continue performing together, as music was both their passion and their career. George and laura performed and gave music lessons for many years, until Laura's unexpected passing in 2000. It was shortly before her passing that they met Kerry Christensen and were invited to join Kerry in Arizona. George and Kerry performed for a couple of years, and then George went on to perform at other venues in Arizona, ending with the Rhythm Cats Show at the Silver Theater.George is survived by his parents, George and Audrey Staerkel, a brother Robert (Terry), three nieces and a nephew, a grand-niece, three grand-nephews, and many special friends.Friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Silver star Theater, 5247 E. Brown Road, Mesa, AZ 85205. A private celebration of George's life for immediate family and close friends will follow.Biography from Volga German Institute @ Fairfield University: George Staerkel was originally from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. George played his first professional gig at age 10 as an organist with the Esquire Trio, giving him more than 10 decades of professional experience. After attending Lawrence University Conservatory of music in the early 70's, he spent many years on the road, most notably serving as lead vocalist, keyboardist and instrumentalist with the world famous "Tokens" (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) from 1980 - 1985. He made Arizona his home in the year 2000 where he has been thrilling audiences ever since. George has produced an exciting musical experience that showcases the talents of the famous "Rhythm Cats". George brings to the stage a five octave+ vocal range and expertise with any style of music. He will amaze you with over 50 different instruments including celebrity horns of Doc Severinsen, Boots Randolph, Her Alpert, Al Hirt, Tex Beneke, Pete Fountain and Maynard Ferguson among others. His instrument collection also included many "one of a kind" instruments (like the world's only "Bathorn") and the world's largest and smallest Saxes to name a few. At the time of his death in December 2017, George was the musical director and producer of the Rhythm Cats Show. Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
