London: Dennis Dobson, 1967. 1st hardcover edition. There was a PBO (paperback original) that was published in 1964). With “First published in Great Britain in 1967 by Dobson Books Ltd . . . “ printed at the top of the copyright page, which indicates that this is the 1st hardcover edition, 1st printing. In the 1st state dust jacket without a SeaCon seal on the front panel of the dust jacket. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there was a paperback original (PBO) that preceded all hardcover editions of THE WANDERER. However, this Dobson hardcover edition preceded the U.S. Walker hardcover edition. So, this is the real deal: the true 1st hardcover edition of THE WANDERER in the correct 1st state dust jacket. He spent part of his young life touring with his parents, who were theatre actors. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1932 with a degree in Philosophy. He introduced his famous Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser characters in the August 1939 issue of Unknown magazine, which was edited by the great and famous John W. Campbell. Fritz Leiber’s early writing was heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Graves. During the 1950’s his writing was also influenced by the works of Carl Jung, especially the concepts of the anima and the shadow. Leiber also loved cats and cats feature prominently in many of his stories. Upon inspection, Fritz Leiber was equally at home (and was great at) writing science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Leiber’s 1st book was NIGHT’S BLACK AGENTS, which was published by Arkham House. Fritz Leiber was the author of such great and famous books as NIGHT’S BLACK AGENTS (an Arkham House book), the “Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser” series, including SWORDS AND DEVILTRY, SWORDS AGAINST DEATH, SWORDS IN THE MIST, SWORDS AGAINST WIZARDRY, THE SWORDS OF LANKHMAR, SWORDS AND ICE MAGIC, and THE KNIGHT AND KNAVE OF SWORDS, CONJURE WIFE, GATHER DARKNESS!, THE SINFUL ONES, THE GREEN MILLENNIUM, THE BIG TIME, THE WANDERER (offered here), A SPECTRE IS HAUNTING TEXAS, OUR LADY OF DARKNESS, RIME ISLE, ERVOOL, TWO SOUGHT ADVENTURE (a Gnome Press book), SHIPS TO THE STARS, THE NIGHT OF THE WOLF, THE SECRET SONGS, SHIP OF SHADOWS, CHANGEWAR, THE LEIBER CHRONICLES (a Dark Harvest book), THE BLACK GONDOLIER, DAY DARK NIGHT BRIGHT, STRANGE WONDERS (A Subterranean Press book), and many, many others. From the dust jacket: “ . . . THE WANDERER . . . FRITZ LEIBER . . . It began so quietly . . . so quietly that nobody except a few frightened scientists even suspected what might be happening . . . Then suddenly one day it was there. It came without malice, an elemental force, a climactic power greater than any the Earth had ever seen in its billions of years of evolution, a phenomenon which reduced this planet to the size of a anthill pushed out of the way by a bulldozer. Men called it the Wanderer . . . Yet despite its vast impersonality, to each human being on Earth the Wanderer spelled something personal -- after all, death is very personal indeed. And the Wanderer meant death for millions. But for others -- many others -- it was something else again . . . To millions of humans running over the shifting crust of the Earth like ants, the Wanderer came as terror, to upset the certainties of science, to wreck the world, but to open up the hearts and minds of mankind . . . “ Some of the awards and award nominations that Fritz Leiber has been honored with: 1945: DESTINY TIMES THREE. 1996 Retro Hugo Award nominee for Best Novel. 1950: “Coming Attraction.” 2001 Retro Hugo Award nominee for Best Short Story. 1958: “A Deskful of Girls.” Hugo Award nominee for Best Novelette. 1958: “Rump-Titty-Titty-Tum-Tah-Tee.” Hugo Award nominee for Best Short Story. 1961: Fritz Leiber is honored as a Worldcon Special Award winner. 1961: THE BIG TIME. Clearly Fritz Leiber was (and remains) one of the best and most important and most collectible science fiction, fantasy, and horror authors of all time. He was one of the few authors who very successfully could write fantasy, horror, and science fiction. He was published by Arkham House and Gnome Press. He is in Halls of Fame for science fiction, fantasy, and horror. He was one of the best all-around genre authors ever. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE book in a VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black textured paper binding with bright silver lettering on the spine of the book. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. There are two minor smudges on the title page of the book; each about the size of the eraser on the end of a pencil; unobtrusive. The edges of the pages of the book show minor foxing and a bit of soiling, but less than is usually encountered. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of 25s net. Normally this dust jacket is price-clipped, so this copy is quite unusual. Also, this is the 1st state dust jacket without the SeaCon symbol on the front panel of the dust jacket. The largely white dust jacket shows minor tanning on the spine panel, but less than is usually encountered. Great and famous dust jacket artwork by Richard Weaver. Overall, this is a much nicer copy of both the book and the dust jacket of THE WANDERER than is usually encountered. At the time of this listing, this is the only copy of the Dobson 1st hardcover edition of THE WANDERER that has a non-price-clipped dust jacket currently listed on EBAY. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF FRITZ LEIBER 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles.
