The books went out of print in the 1960s, despite their popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. FREDDY and the POPINJAY (1945) is the 12th book in the humorous children's series Freddy the Pig. After Freddy, a perceptive and poetic pig, helps a nearsighted Robin get glasses (result of an unfortunate tail seen as a worm incident) and aids in planning an important wedding, he and other Bean farm animals try to change a slingshot-wielding boy into a friend. vi + 245pp. In addition to the Freddy books, Brooks created the character Mr. Ed the Talking Horse. Dramatic, humorous illustrations by Kurt Wiese (1887-1974). Kurt Wiese illustrated over 300 children’s books and wrote and illustrated another 20 books. He received two Newbery Awards and two Caldecott Honor Book Awards. Hardcover has red cloth boards with black lettering and ornamentation on front and spine, in fine (as new) DJ.
