About the magazine:History depicted in engravings from Illustrated Antique Weeklies- From the mid 1800's to the turn of the century, even before many could read, the extremely popular illustrated newspapers such as Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated, L'Illustration Journal Universel, and Illustrated London News pictured the news and events of the times. Special artist-correspondents were present at the event to accurately sketch the scene as it was making history. These sketches were rushed to publishers whereby skilled artisans engraved them on wood blocks. Within a week after the event the printed illustrated newspapers were in the public's hands. Page 1079 is text, no pictures, which includes a nice poem called "Gentle Mary." pages 1080-1081 open to a large 1872 picture called "The Arrest," by German artist Lasch. It depicts two uniformed men who have entered a home and to the astonishment and sadness of the inhabitants, one gentleman is being placed under arrest. On page 1082, the explanation is the man being arrested is a deserter and the uniformed men are soldiers. Page 1082 is text, no pictures. Paper is in great shape for its age. The large picture has a few holes in it in the center due to it being pulled from a book. The middle of this picture is also crimped up but can be flattened, and some of the holes can be somewhat repaired by folding the paper back in its original spot. the picture is otherwise in great shape. No other holes, tears, worn spots or fading. The white border has browned a bit over time but all edges and corners ar in great condition.
