Founding Father Thomas Mifflin Signs Request For Land Survey Less Indian Land

Description: Offering an 8 x 13 document March 31st, 1791, signed by THOMAS MIFFLIN, governor of Pennsylvania, who also signed the U.S. Constitution, and SAMUEL LYON, who became a deputy surveyor, “Whereas JOSEPH THORNBURGH...has requested to take up one hundred eighty-six acres of land including an improvement adjoining land of Michael Ege and others in Allen & Middletown Townships in the county of Cumberland. (PROVIDED the land is not within the last purchase made of the INDIANS) for which he agrees to pay immediately into the office of the Receiver General , for the use of this state, at the rate of ten pounds per hundred acres, in gold, silver, paper money...or certificates, agreeably to an act of the assembly...These are therefore to authorize and require you to survey or cause to be surveyed...at the place aforesaid...To DANIEL BRODHEAD, Esquire Surveyor General.” LYON has signed the document for himself and for Brodhead. MIFFLIN (1744-1800) was also a Revolutionary War General, Washington’s Aide-de-Camp and Quartermaster General. He was also President of the Continental Congress, where he served two terms and was 1st Governor of Pennsylvania. After signing the U.S. Constitution in 1787, he replaced Benjamin Franklin as president of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On November 25, 1789, he was elected president of the Constitutional Convention for Pennsylvania. LYON, became a deputy surveyor under his uncle, Col. John Armstrong; appointed, May 22, 1770, by provincial authority, a magistrate for Milford township; re-appointed justice of the peace, June 19, 1771, by the “Supreme Executive Council,” who made all appointments previous to the formation of the State Government, in 1790. On April 3, 1780, Col. Lyon was appointed commissioner of purchases for the Revolutionary army for the county of Cumberland, and on July 7, 1780, assistant commissioner of purchases. Expected toning.
