Description: STOCK PHOTOS ONLY In 1982, Fitzcarraldo carried this ethos to new heights as Kinski portrayed a man who, in order to bring grand opera to the depths of Peru, has a huge steamship hauled over a mountainside using ropes, pulleys, and human endurance. The mad ambition of the film matched that of its hero as Herzog repeatedly placed crew and actors at risk of their lives. In the remote town of Iquitos, nestled deep within the jungle at the turn of the century, an impossible dream takes root. The outskirts of the town are marked by dilapidated fish shacks, slowly succumbing to the encroaching mud, while in stark contrast, the splendid houses of the nouveau-riche rubber barons stand proudly in the center. It is within this setting, rich in grotesque contrast, that Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald—affectionately known as Fitzcarraldo to the natives—conceives his audacious dream. Fitzcarraldo envisions a grand celebration of Grand Opera, uniting the legendary Enrico Caruso and Sarah Bernhardt. To fulfill this extravagant dream, he hatches a daring plan to exploit a vast area of rubber trees extending beyond the impassable Ucayali Falls. Undeterred by the enormity of the task, Fitzcarraldo resolves to overcome the natural barrier by literally lifting his colossal steamboat over a mountain, traversing from one branch of the river to the other. In his quest for the extraordinary, Fitzcarraldo enlists the support of a tribe of Indians who are captivated by the enchanting records featuring the voice of the greatest singer of all time. Battling against relentless fever, swarms of mosquitoes, and scorching heat, Fitzcarraldo relentlessly pursues the impossible. His indomitable spirit and unwavering determination become the driving forces behind a remarkable journey that defies the limits of what mankind can achieve.
