It is within this setting, rich in grotesque contrast, that Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald—affectionately known as Fitzcarraldo to the natives—conceives his audacious dream. Fitzcarraldo envisions a grand celebration of Grand Opera, uniting the legendary Enrico Caruso and Sarah Bernhardt. To fulfill this extravagant dream, he hatches a daring plan to exploit a vast area of rubber trees extending beyond the impassable Ucayali Falls.
