Description: Fabre's Book of Insects Retold from Alexander Teixeira de Mattos' Translation of Fabre's "Souvenirs Entomologiques" By Mrs. Rodolph Stawell (Maud Margaret Key Stawell) Illustrated by E.J. Detmold, 1936 Printing. Originally published in 1921 by Tudor Publishing Company (New York). Fabre's Book of Insects is a non-fiction book that is a retelling of Alexander Teixeira de Mattos' translation of Jean-Henri Fabre's Souvenirs entomologiques. It was retold by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell and illustrated by Edward Detmold. It talks about insects in real life, mythology and folklore. Based on Jean-Henri Fabre's French entomological work of 1879, this beautifully illustrated book about our six-legged neighbors, FABRE'S BOOK OF INSECTS, features soft-focus, Art Nouveau-esque insect illustrations by E. J. Detmold. Missing the tipped-in color frontispiece and tissue guard of a scarab or sacred beetle, 11 other tipped-in color illustrations and tissue guards are present. 184 pages. Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre (1823–1915) was a French naturalist, entomologist, and author known for the lively style of his popular books on the lives of insects. His Souvenirs Entomologiques is a series of texts on insects and arachnids Fabre released from 1891-1909. Fabre was an influence on Charles Darwin, who called him an 'inimitable observer', and he helped shape the science of modern entomology. As noted, this book is accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957). He and his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were prolific Victorian book illustrators. The twins mastered the techniques of watercolor etching and of color printing with copper plates, buying a printing press and producing their own proofs at home. Edward Julius became one of the most sought after and talented of illustrators, depicting animals and plants with an extraordinary understanding, and making use of fantasy settings of architecture and landscape. This is a wonderful vintage book that would be an excellent addition to any collection; it would look beautiful on display! Some Reviews of the Book: A NY Times Higher Education review says "It was Fabre's Book of Insects, extracts from that extraordinary man's Souvenirs entomologiques, "retold" – and with an exemplary clarity and simplicity which made me feel enlisted and embraced but never patronised – by a Mrs Rudolph Stawell. Years later I read the full Souvenirs themselves and wondered why I had not done so long before, as soon as I could read French. The magic is Fabre's own, not imported by Mrs Stawell." It was reviewed by The New York Times. Please reach out with any additional questions!
