Book blurb: ALCESTIS • MEDEA • HIPPOLYTUS • ANDROMACHE • ION • TROJAN WOMEN • ELECTRA • THE BACCHANTS • IPHIGENIA AMONG THE TAURIANS • IPHIGENIA AT AULIS The first playwright of democracy, Euripides wrote with enduring insight and biting satire about the social and political problems of contemporary Athenian life. George Bernard Shaw, whose own plays were profoundly influenced by the works of Euripides, regarded him as the greatest of the Greek tragic playwrights. This volume includes all of Euripides® most important plays in brilliant modern prose translations by Moses Hadas and John McLean. Introduction by Moses Hadas. EURIPIDES was born in Salamis around 485 B.C. He wrote ninety-two plays of which only nineteen are extant, the latter being works of his middle and later years. He was criticized by the conservatives of his time for introducing shabby heroes and immoral women into his plays, a practice which they considered degrading to the pure and noble form of tragedy. However, audiences to whom his predecessors were cold and remote found Euripides always direct and appealing. After his death c. 406 B.C. Euripides far outstripped his competitors in popularity, and many stipes is competine taüer of modern European drama.
