Description: Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden, Günter Guhr and Peter Neumann (1985). Ethnographisches Mosaik: Aus Den Sammlungen Des Staatlichen Museums Für Völkerkunde Dresden. Berlin, Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften The Dresden Museum of Ethnology, Founded in 1875, is a hidden gem as it holds more than 90,000 artifacts in one of the earliest actively collected treasures from around the world. Having been hidden for decades behind the Iron Curtain it did not enjoy the fame of other ethnographic museums such as those of Berlin and Vienna. It holds amazing collections from Africa including significant works from the Benin Empire, early Polynesian and Native American works, and much more. See images for a table of content. This is a large-format lavishly illustrated 276-page catalog of the collection published shortly before German unification. The quality of the color and black and white images is stunning. The book is arranged geographically with short introductions for each section and extended captions for each object. There is also fascinating information on the history of collecting and the museum itself. Please note that the book is a bit too large for my scanner so some of the images are truncated. Check out my other listings of African, Oceanic, Native American art and art history, and other regions of world art and cultures for additional rare finds.
