THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE - 1972 A spy discovers that the Chinese government has created a doomsday device (the "key" to which, "only Chairman Mao has") capable of destroying the Earth and it will be activated in 72 hours. Soon after, Astra – a two-year return mission to Venus by the United States Space Program – has its time of launch speeded up and half of the male flight crew are replaced by women shortly before take-off, including one Russian. Shortly before blastoff military alerts are put into effect. After leaving Earth, the seven crew members of Astra deduce that they have been put together to restart the human race should the Chinese activate their device. Shortly after this, the device goes off and Earth is destroyed.As Astra continues to Venus, the crew realizes that a safe landing on Venus is impossible unless the crew is reduced to three. One of the crew members tries to rape another, at which point she accidentally gets them both blown out of an airlock.Two more crew-members—Danny and Major Bronski—are lost as they head out to repair a fault with the spaceship. However, they notice another spacecraft nearby and jump to it. The second craft proves to be a lost Soviet ship that disappeared piloted by a close friend of the Russian crew member. Though its pilot is dead, Danny and Bronski successfully power up the Soviet ship. Before the two ships can rendezvous, contact with Astra is lost.A disembodied voice cuts in, claiming to be the collective consciousness of the Venusian population. The voice informs the survivors (whom the Venusians refer to as the "Last of Man") in the Russian ship that Astra no longer exists (presumably destroyed somehow by the telepathic Venusians), and that the ship (due to the "self-destructive" potential of humans) will be not allowed to reach Venus. It gives a cryptic message regarding the prospect of starting new life in a "very strange and very great" place, somewhere far "beyond the rim of the universe," before the ship suddenly blasts off, apparently by the power of the Venusians, and the movie abruptly concludes. Doomsday Machine, also known as Escape from Planet Earth (video title), is an American science fiction film mostly filmed in 1967 but completed without the original cast or sets in 1972 Production of Doomsday Machine began in 1967 under Herbert J. Leder's direction under the titles Armageddon 1975 and Doomsday Plus Seven. Production stopped on the film before it was completed (presumably due to funding problems), and the unfinished footage lay in storage for several years. Production resumed in 1972, though without benefit of access to the original cast members, costumes or sets. Sloppy production standards have made the film a favorite for buffs of bad cinema. The film relies extensively on stock footage, including real (but badly degraded) NASA rocket footage, special effects shots from David L. Hewitt's The Wizard of Mars (1965; Hewitt receives a special effects credit for Doomsday Machine), Gorath (1962) and other disparate sources, leading to numerous continuity errors. Among such mistakes is the external appearance of the Astra, which inexplicably changes throughout the film. The protracted last segment of the movie – with an American and Russian astronaut boarding a derelict Soviet spacecraft – was obviously shot after the unfinished principal photography without the participation of the original actors. After this point, the characters stay in their spacesuits, which look different from those shown in the immediately preceding scenes, and their helmets are now opaque, concealing the doubles' faces. The characters do speak but in now with different voices. The slow, repetitive pacing of this sequence is also markedly different from the rest of the film and suggests an effort to pad the film's running time out in order to reach a desired length. This episode/movie first aired on Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark during Season 2, on August 27, 1983 I didn't quite know what to expect from this DVD. Anything that's an episode of a movie-related TV show is kind of suspect when it comes to actual movie quality--so imagine my surprise to find that Shout! Factory actually remastered Doomsday Machine from a film print, and that it looks about as good as it's ever going to. The DVD, furthermore, provides the option to watch the movie by itself or with Elvira popping up to provide commentary once in a while; the only drawback to this is that, if you choose to watch the movie alone, you're still going to get the occasional artificial fade to black that wasn't in the original film. Since this is Doomsday Machine, it's not as though it's a great compromise to the movie's original artistic intent or anything. WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON - 1973 Jack Whittier (Dean Stockwell) is the press secretary for the White House and for the President of the United States. While on assignment in Hungary, he is bitten by a wolf who actually turns out to be a man. When Jack tries to report it, he believes it is the work of Communists. He then meets a gypsy woman who tells him it was her son and he needed to die to be saved. She then gives him a charm and tells him to be careful now that he may suffer the same effects.When he returns to Washington D.C., he is assigned to the President (Biff McGuire); he has also been having an affair with the President's daughter Marion (Jane House). Jack suddenly starts to feel different changes about him whenever the moon is full. Numerous murders suddenly occur all over Washington, all related to the President's staff. Jack is now convinced that he is a werewolf; when he tries to explain this to his superior, Commander Salmon (Beeson Carroll), the latter does not believe him. Jack then presents a pattern of where the murders have happened in the shape of a pentagram; he convinces him (Salmon) to lock him in his apartment and restrain him and also to be documented. The President needs Jack for a special interview with the Chinese prime minister; however, Jack starts to change into a werewolf and he attacks the President.He then leaves for Marion, who then shoots him with a silver bullet, thus killing him and changing him back to his human form. Many witnesses decide to cover up the act saying Jack bravely came into the line of fire.In audio over the closing credits, the President addresses the nation. At the very end, he starts to change into a werewolf. The Werewolf of Washington is a 1973 horror comedy film written and directed by Milton Moses Ginsberg and starring Dean Stockwell. Produced by Nina Schulman, it satirizes several individuals in Richard Nixon's administration. The film was originally released theatrically in the United States by Diplomat in 1973. After it performed underwhelmingly in initial engagements, the title was changed to Werewolf at Midnight, and ads stopped drawing attention to its political themes. This episode/movie first aired on Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark during Season 1, on November 21, 1981 The Werewolf of Washington was made by Milton Moses Ginsberg in 1973 as a weird hybrid of comedic werewolf movie and political satire. Dean Stockwell is a Presidential advisor who was infected by a werewolf during a trip to Hungary, and who brings no end of problems back to the US with him. The references to the Nixon administration are quite clear, with the evil villain being called "Dr. Kiss", Presidential bowling (a Nixon favorite), and more. The special effects budget was extremely low and the werewolf transformation is particularly ludicrous. The film is best viewed as political satire, and in that vein is modestly effective. It has an earnest cheesiness that I like, and it lends itself to Elvira's campy host segments quite well. COUNT DRACULA'S GREAT LOVE - 1973 Count Dracula's Great Love opens outside a creepy old sanitorium in the Carpathian Mountains as two delivery men arrive with a large, heavy man-shaped crate. The owner, Doctor Wendell Marlowe (Paul Naschy), has just purchased the sanitorium, but has not yet moved in. Realizing that these rich castle-owning types have money and jewels just lying around, they decide to wander about and see if there is anything they can steal. One is struck in the head with an ax and the other gets his throat ripped out by a man in a black cape with velvet lining. Meanwhile, a stagecoach loaded with four beautiful young women - Karen (Haydee Politoff), Senta (Rosanna Yanni), Marlene (Ingrid Garbo), and Elke (Mirta Miller) and their friend Imre Polvi (Vic Winner), a strapping young male, loses a carriage wheel while traveling through the infamous Borgo Pass. When the stagecoach driver is killed in a freak accident, the five passengers seek shelter from an oncoming storm in the nearby sanitorium, where they are welcomed by Doctor Marlowe. Their host invites them into his home and lets them stay for as long as they need to. Of course, Marlowe is really Count Dracula. It is not before long that the new guests are bitten one by one, composing Dracula's new army of the undead - save for the virginal Karen. Dracula seeks the rebirth of his daughter Radna and in order to bring about her resurrection, Dracula must complete a blood ritual and convince Karen to voluntarily join him as his immortal bride in eternal darkness.He seduces all of the girls but Karen, and then chains them in his dungeon. At the end of the film, he kills them by exposing them to sunlight. When he seduces Karen, he knows he has found true love. He tells Karen that he loves her and he cannot let her become one of the living dead. So he commits suicide by thrusting a wooden stake into his own heart and before he dies, he utters her name. Count Dracula's Great Love (Spanish: El gran amor del conde Drácula) is a 1973 Spanish film directed by Javier Aguirre, and starring Paul Naschy as Count Dracula. The film also features Rosanna Yanni, Haydee Politoff (whom Naschy did not like working with), Mirta Miller and Ingrid Garbo. The film was shot in 1972, but took about a year to be released anywhere. It first premiered in April 1973 at the Paris Festival of Fantastic Films, along with Naschy's Hunchback of the Morgue, and then was released in Spain on May 12, 1973. It was released to U.S. theaters in March 1974 as Dracula's Great Love (on a double bill with The Vampires Night Orgy), then re-released later in 1979 by Motion Picture Marketing under the title Cemetery Girls (the poster emphasizing the film's adult content and indicating nothing of its star Paul Naschy or Spanish origin). Contrary to some sources, this film was never released under the titles Vampire Playgirls or Graveyard Tramps; these were other films retitled by MPM which were often paired with Cemetery Girls in drive-ins. The film was released (heavily edited) in the U.K. on August 8, 1974 as Dracula's Virgin Lovers, double-billed with Venom (aka The Legend of Spider Forest). The running time in England was cut from 83 minutes to only 66 minutes. The film was released in Italy as The Diabolical Loves of Nosferatu, in Thailand as Virgin Lovers, and in Mexico as The Orgy of Dracula. The shoot was plagued with problems. A car accident on a windy mountain road resulted in a head injury for Haydee Politoff, crew members were injured when some scenery collapsed on them, and a chemical used in the special effects scenes turned out to be toxic and seriously sickened both Ingrid Garbo and Mirta Miller. While Politoff recovered from her head injury, Naschy and Aguirre temporarily halted all work on the film and in the meantime commenced work on their next project together, The Hunchback of the Morgue. By the time she was back at work they had completely finished filming Hunchback, and immediately returned to work on Count Dracula. The underground cellars in the film were shot in an old bunker under the Parque de el Capricho in Madrid, which used to serve as the headquarters for the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. This episode/movie first aired on Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark during Season 1, on May 29, 1982 One of Paul Naschy’s films where he is the vampire rather than the werewolf. Not a whole lot happens in this film, it’s got heaps of atmosphere, but it seems mostly as excuse for Paul Naschy to romance the ladies. Elvira’s bits are a welcome break from the rather sedate pace of the film. I have never seen it look better than it does on this release, and I appreciate the actual retro feel that so many movies attempt and never quiet manage. LEGACY OF BLOOD - 1971 In this 1971 effort, Christopher Dean (John Carradine) has died. His four adult children—Greg, Veronica, Johnnie, and Leslie—along with their spouses, as well as Christopher's longtime three servants, have been summoned to the mansion to listen to Christopher's previously recorded last will.The servants are entitled to a monthly salary of $500 as long as they remain in service. The children, on the other hand, are to inherit equal portions of the $136 million balance of the estate. However, in the event of any child's demise, the remaining share will be distributed among the surviving siblings. If all the children perish, the servants become the heirs to whatever is left.A peculiar condition in the will requires the children to stay in the deceased's house for one week to qualify for their inheritance. Christopher, in his recorded message, explicitly expresses his lack of affection or respect for his four offspring. He advises them to decline his offer if they possess any virtue.The narrative takes a dark turn as the killings commence with the murder of Mrs. Greg Dean's dog. The violence escalates to the decapitation of the police officer summoned to address the incident, continuing until only one individual remains alive. The terms of the will create an atmosphere of suspicion among all present parties.The surprise, and seemingly illogical, twist lies in the revelation of the perpetrator and the motive behind the killings. Blood Legacy (also called Legacy of Blood and Will to Die) is a 1971 horror film directed by Carl Monson, starring Rodolfo Acosta, Merry Anders, Norman Bartold, John Carradine, and Faith Domergue. There is a 1978 film with the same name and a similar plot, but it should not be confused with this one. This episode/movie first aired on Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark during Season 1, on April 10, 1982 Legacy of Blood has a certain campy charm. But as Elvira says, "This movie has no plot! Just 14 subplots in search of a story." Please note this is an early episode of Elvira's Movie Macabre, circa 1982, so Elvira doesn't have the quick-draw sarcasm she would develop later. Even so, she injects some necessary life into a forgettable flick. THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT - 1973 Two rival brothers are looking for the magic ring of the Nibelungen, a mystical jewel that confers all power to the one who possesses it. The first, Karl, is an archaeologist who wishes to give it to an archaeological institute; the second, Franz, is a materialist who wants to appropriate it to be rich and powerful. Franz, after having read Karl's research, travels to the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania, to the ancient castle of Count Dracula.The innkeeper's daughter tells him that on the first full moon night of the summer that five virgin girls from the village are chosen by the powers of evil and taken to the castle to be sacrificed, and that the place is infested with vampires. She gives Franz an amulet for protection. After spending the night with the girl, Franz leaves her to go to the castle but forgets to take the amulet.In the manner of Count Dracula, he is greeted by the housekeeper Lara and meets Countess Dolingen De Vries, the Count's widow. The Countess uses the famous ring to bring girls home to kill them, then to bathe in their blood. Bewitched and bitten by her, Franz immediately marries her. Their marriage is followed by the sacrifice of five girls.Equally looking for the ring, Karl arrives in turn in Transylvania, but does not know his brother was vampirized by the Countess. The Devil's Wedding Night (Italian: Il plenilunio delle vergini, lit. 'Full Moon of the Virgins') is a 1973 Italian horror film Producer Franco Gaudenzi stated that The Devil's Wedding Night was a film that actor Mark Damon "wanted to do, it was a script he had, it was his creature." Gaudenzi expanded on this, stating Damon was planning on selling the film to an American production company who was interested in distributing it. The screenplay is credited to Walter Bigari and Luigi Batzella, while the copy of the screenplay which is close to finished product with many technical indications only credits Batzella's name. This version of the screenplay includes a prologue which is not in the film, in which the Countess summons the forces of evil while in her castle nude women are tied to a column with their throats being slashed. When choosing the director, Gaudenzi hired Batzella, stating that he was often in their office discussing film ideas with Joe D'Amato and Bruno Mattei. The Devil's Wedding Night began shooting on July 31, 1972. It was shot on location at Castello Piccolomini in Balsorano. Gaudenzi stated that despite only Batzella getting a credit on the film, it was directed by both D'Amato and Batzella, as Gaudenzi had D'Amato reshoot some scenes. Damon was impressed with D'Amato, and recommended him to Roger Corman to work on the American production The Arena. Rosalba Neri spoke later about Batzella's direction on set stating that she "never understood him. It was like there were two of them, going different directions...and rarely meeting. A bit schizophrenic, indeed." The Devil's Wedding Night was released in Italy by Florida Cinematografica on 14 March 1973. The film's erotic content was cut by Italian censors who demanded that a sex scene be shortened and that "all scenes be eliminated where the man kisses the lower part of the woman's body." The film grossed a total of 117,115,000 Italian lire domestically in Italy. This episode/movie first aired on Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark during Season 2, on March 5, 1983 I got this movie as an episode of the original ELVIRA'S MOVIE MACABRE, and it is a fun trip back to the heyday of horror hosts! In this particular episode, Elvira's Auntie Virus (played by Eve Smith) takes over the show! While the print on THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT, needless to say, has seen better days and is scratchy, it is the best the movie has ever looked and will look for some time. Elvira's hosting segments provide a nice breather from the scary atmosphere the movie creates, but you have the option of seeing just the movie. Enjoy!
