The Story: After her mother's death, Ruby Lee Gissing (Ashley Judd) relocates to Florida to start anew. She finds a job at a souvenir store and becomes friends with the shop's owner, Mildred Chambers (Dorothy Lyman), and slowly acclimates to her new surroundings. Soon she's juggling the affections of Mildred's son, Ricky (Bentley Mitchum), and the good-natured Mike (Todd Field). She also tries to come to terms with her past. Comments: This film was the debut feature of actress Ashley Judd and she makes a big impression. Except for the 80's period costumes, the film has held up very nicely. Ms Judd is both radiant and touching, clearly a high point in her acting career, as she became the "go to" girl for dumb action films and slasher movies! Writer/Director Victor Nunez (Ulees Gold... another excellent character study) treats this ordinary young woman's life with deep respect, allowing her story to build slowly and with a lot of detail.
