Description: Delta Airlines was awarded an Atlanta - London route in the 1977-78 Transatlantic Route Proceeding, its first route to Europe. In inaugurating this route, it added a New Orleans - Atlanta segment to the flight and secured authorization for different cachets at both U.S. cities. Covers received a backstamp reading “Received / Gatwick Airport / London, England / May 1, 1978.” This cover was carried on the April 30, 1978 Foreign Air Mail Route 31 inaugural flight from the Atlanta, Georgia Airport Mail Facility to London, England (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F36-36F.
