Description: Daisy Makeig-Jones, Wedgwood, Lustre Butterfly Bowl, c. 1920This product data sheet is originally written in English. This antique and charming footed bowl was created by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood. The interior features a stunning mother-of-pearl finish, with a beautiful hand-painted polychrome butterfly at its center. The exterior is glazed in a dark caramel to brownish color, adorned with gilded, hand-painted butterflies arranged in a circular pattern, and features gilded filigree ornaments along the top edge, both inside and out. Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones was a renowned pottery designer for Wedgwood, best known for her iconic "Fairyland Lustre" series. Born in Wath-upon-Dearne, near Rotherham in Yorkshire, Daisy was the eldest of seven children and came from a professional background. After attending boarding school and studying at the Torquay School of Art, she joined Wedgwood in 1909. By 1914, Daisy had become a full designer with her own studio. Influenced by various decorative techniques used in ceramic production, Daisy sought to create a completely new and captivating style by combining three methods: underglaze mottling, overglaze graining, and iridescence, along with whimsical designs outlined in gilt. She convinced her studio neighbor, James Hodgkiss, and his decoration team to assist in developing this concept, which led to the launch of the First Ten Lustre series in October 1914. This series featured ten unique patterns, each showcasing different combinations of lustre colors. Our bowl features pattern Z4830, No. 8 in the Lustre Range, which concluded the First Ten Lustre series. The pattern presents a mother-of-pearl lustre interior with a richly ornamented gilded design and a distinctive multicolored butterfly. The exterior displays the dark caramel lustre, another hallmark of Daisy's elegant work. Designed by Makeig-Jones, this range was produced from 1914 to 1929 and is now highly collectible. Due to limited editions and increasing interest in Daisy Makeig-Jones' designs, the value of her work continues to rise, making it a sound investment for collectors.
